Australian Development Scholarships

Australian Development Scholarships (ADS) are awarded by Australian Government for potential prospective leaders from developing countries. These easy scholarships are administered by AusAID and the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR)Australia. ADS was formed to strengthen ties and partnership with participating countries which provide opportunities for competent future leaders from developing countries to undertake Graduate and Postgraduate studies (long term award) and short courses or professional development (short term award) at Australia’s world class universities and education institutions.

The eligible recipient countries and their country-specific criteria can be seen at their website here. To apply for this scholarship, you need to select your country of residency or citizenship from the above link for detailed and specific information on eligibility and requirements, dates of application, priority areas and other relevant information such as how to obtain the application form. Applicants who are successfully granted this scholarship must sign a contract with the Commonwealth of Australia to comply with the conditions of the scholarship. The applicants’ home country governments may also have their own conditions to the scholarship.

However, the most important condition pertaining to the award is that the award recipients are strictly required to return home upon the completion of their studies in order to apply their knowledge to economic and social development of their home countries. Otherwise, they will incur a debt to the Commonwealth of Australia for the total value of the scholarship. ADS are granted for the minimum period required for the scholars to complete their studies as specified by the participating Australian higher education Institutions (http://www.ausaid.gov.au/scholar/ads-institutions.cfm), including any introductory academic training before the program starts.

This scholarship includes the following benefits:

  • Pre-course English (PCE) fees – when considered necessary PCE is available for students in their home country to improve their English before departing to Australia;
  • Establishment allowance- a once only payment of AUD5,000 for accommodation expenses, study materials, text books;
  • Full tuition fees;
  • Contribution to Living Expenses (CLE) which is paid fortnightly to cover basic living expenses of which total amount is AUD25,000 a year;
  • Introductory Academic Program (IAP)—a compulsory 4-6 week training prior to the start of the program which provides the awards recipients with information on life and study in Australia;
  • Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the award duration (only for students not families)- to cover the student’s basic medical costs (except for previous conditions);
  • Supplementary Academic Support (Tutorial Assistance)- available when necessary to ensure the scholars’ academic success;
  • Fieldwork (for research students only)- one return economy class airfare via the most direct route to their home country or within Australia is available for eligible research students.

To be successfully granted this scholarship, during the interview test and in the application form, you need to have clear idea and concept on what improvement you are going to make in your home country upon the completion of your study. In other words, you should describe and clarify how you are going to apply the knowledge you have gained to the development in your home country. Last but not least, please fill out the application clearly and neatly (word-processed is better).
