There are many easy scholarships available to students. Some are a lump sum, others are distributed throughout the course of the students education. One such scholarship is the Minority Teachers of IL (MTI) Scholarship Program. This excellent scholarship assists minority student who want to become a teacher. The Minority Teachers of Illinois scholarship is specifically for those who will be teaching in IL after graduation from their University program. If the student chooses not to teach in IL, this scholarship then becomes a loan that must be repaid. This is to help raise the number of minorities that are able to go in to education.
The amount of this award is up to $5,000 per year, and there is a list of what items can be covered under the scholarship. The amount of scholarships that are given out yearly depend on the budget that is given to the scholarship program by the governor of IL and the general assembly. In order to be considered for this scholarship program there are certain eligibility requirements that must be met. The first is that the student must be of a minority ethnicity: African American, Hispanic, Asian, or Native American. The student must be a resident of IL, and either a US citizen or a qualifying non-citizen. A student in the program must have attained a high school diploma or GED. While enrolled in the program, the student must maintain a GPA of no less than 2.5 on a 4-point scale.
These are in addition to many common requirements for scholarships and attending college in general. Each student must apply for this scholarship annually. Since there is the possibility that this would change to a loan, there is a promissory note that must be submitted along with the scholarship application. In order to be considered for this scholarship, a person must be accepted into a qualifying university at least half-time. The student must intend on becoming a teacher after graduation. So the most important thing to do when applying for this scholarship is to prepare a written essay on why you want to become a teacher. This is basically for your own record.
There may be some questions asking about your interest in education on the application. So in order to be able to get your words out how you want them, it would be helpful to practice what you want to say ahead of time. Also, although a great GPA in high school is not required, it is always highly recommended, as it will be more difficult to obtain other funding and even acceptance into a program if a less than satisfactory GPA is the case. Remember, when getting ready to apply for any financial assistance for college, the first thing you must do is to fill out the FAFSA. This can be done as early as January before the school year begins, but it is never too late to apply, though you won’t be able to receive funding until it is in and processed.
